PDF and Passwords

I need to share a pages document in a pdf format and password protect it. Is that possible using just the pages software? or do I need other software? I know how to password protect a pages doc but if you go to share it as a word or pdf it is not password protected anymore. I need to figure out how to do this in as few steps as possible.

In preview press the alt key while choosing the file menu.

When you save as, you have the option to password protect a PDF

Just to add to louishens instructions once the new dialog box opens, click the box marked Encrypt then make password and verify.
