• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Now that I have my iMac, I figure I better get a digital video camera.

Any suggestions on features, brands, etc? I really like the idea of the JVC ones with a built in hard drive. No tapes, DVDs, etc.

This is basically for home movie type use. Taping the kids' basketball games, etc.

Thank you!

Sony TRV-19 (They don't make them anymore, but they are great quality for low $ on eBay)
If you have lots of money go with the HDR-FX1 by Sony.

I wouldn't recommend one of those JVCs with the harddrive. You have no way of letting someone borrow the tape, the resolution isn't as good as miniDV tape, and the price isn't low enough to justify not buying tapes. (a.k.a. It won't pay for it's self in a year if you buy tapes)

Given your description of what you will use it for, I would go with the Sony TRV-19. I've had one for years, and it's just as feature packed as the brand new cameras Sony is rolling out, but it's 3 years old. You can find them on eBay for $200 in box. I've no problems at all connecting it to my Powerbook. It's small, light, and the quality is superb for a handheld camera.
