Trouble running boot camp!

I am trying to run boot camp so that i can install and dual boot windows 7 on my macbook pro. When I run bootcamp assistant it won't allow me to tick the option that says "install or remove windows 7" as it says my start up disc does not have enough space to be partitioned and that I need at least 10 gb of free space before i can do so, however I have freed up some space and I have now at least 17gb of free space, so why does it keep saying this? Also do I first need to select and follow the process that says "Downlaod the latest windows support software from Apple"?

You don't have near enough space to dual boot Windows 7. Additionally, your hard drive is very likely fragmented so that the 17 GB that you do have is scattered throughout the drive. My advice is buy another hard drive that is larger and then install Windows 7 using the Boot Camp assistant.

And yes, you need to download the driver package from Apple. But I would wait until you installed the new larger hard drive before doing so.

Thanks for the response. I have an external hard drive would this work?

Windows does not install on an external drive as part of Microsoft's anti-piracy measures.
