Windows on external drive?

I want to run an app that only runs on Windows. I've got plenty of space on my MacBook Pro hard drive for a windows partition but I just don't want it there. Is there any way to run Windows on an external drive?

Microsoft prevents installing on an external drive as an anti-piracy measure. You may be able to install on your MBP and use Winclone to slone the partition to an external however. Is more than a little tricky.

Please read the following Mac OS X Hints article: LINK Please note, that it has been Microsoft's policy to prevent installing on an external hard drive because of piracy concerns. The article above from MacWorld (OS X hints forum) shows how to do it legally.

If you have Windows 8 Enterprise, you can install Windows using its Windows to Go feature which allows you to install Windows on an external drive. You cannot do this on Windows 7 or earlier.
