I am attempting to put Windows 7 on my MacBook Air through Boot Camp. To start, a little information about my computer:
Runs Mac OS X version 10.6.8
Processor: 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Macintosh HD capacity: 120.85 GB---Available: 48.76 GB----Used: 72.09 GB on disk
Since I want to use bulky things like Visual Studio 2012, I figured I should allow Windows 7 a 30 GB partition. In Boot Camp, however, I received the following message in the middle of the partition process:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
In Disk Utility, the Format section already indicates that my disk is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." Thus, per a suggestion on another forum, I tried erasing the free space with a 7-pass erase of deleted files. After this, Boot Camp still gave the same problem...I guess my files are still too scattered around to leave a nice chunk for Boot Camp to use.
My question now is whether I need to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to put all of my stuff onto an external drive and then restore it all back, (hopefully) arranged nicely this time. Is this the only option, or is there perhaps an easier way to defrag without using any extra hardware? Or...is it worth it anyway, given how full my Mac is already?
