Would be nice to know:
What computer?
What operating system?
What have you tried?
What kind of files?

I cannot delete the files in my trash

The usual cause of that is they're still in use. Reboot your Mac and try again.

EDIT: And please do not cross post. Only post your question to one forum and continue with it until it has run its course or finished. Your duplicate post was removed.

Well Gary step one get rid of Nortons promptly. Check you have not selected Secure Empty Trash in Finder Preferences. If this fail try a reboot. And if you feel paranoid about AV software, use ClamXAV which is freeware.

Dave as in Windows, it is necessary to drag files to the Trash and empty the Trash before removing the thumb drive. The files remaining amy well be formatting files.

I warned you once about cross posting.... you have now cross posted twice regarding the same subject. Again, do not cross post. Your cross posts have been merged here.

Well, looking at the times, the second cross post may have come before he read the request to not do that.

Gary, just in case: "Cross-posting" means starting two threads with the same subject or problem in two different sub-forums. It's much better to do it in one place, besides, cross-posting is frowned upon, as you have gathered by now.
