Using MacBook Pro as a backup hard drive

You should be able to setup a share on the MacBook Pro and then connect to it with Time Machine. There's a few different articles online on how to do this - one of them is here:

Thank you. I do not have a Time Capsule. I'm looking to use my MacBook Pro as a Time Capsule for an iMac. Do you know if this is possible? Thanks.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. The answer to your question is yes. I think you are confusing the terms 'Time Capsule' with 'Time Machine'.
Time Machine is the software that handles backup duties. Time Capsule is a hardware NAS solution meant to compliment the Time Machine software, which has been bundled with every mac since OS X 10.5 (Leopard). So, in essence, you're going to create a share on the MacBook Pro, then connect to it with the iMac using Time Machine.
