Downloading documents

Whenever I email documents from my MacPro to my Ipad 2 or IPhone 4S the following happens:

IPhone - can open the word documents

Ipad - either the documents do not download or when they do they have the suffix .docx which precludes me from opening them.

Can anyone help society's robes?

For the ipod the free office2plus will let you view dock

Is your iPad 2 up to date? There should be no problem viewing .docx documents.
