Hello,
does anyone have a good suggestion for an expternal hard drive that will work easy with my mac book pro.

My specs are:

Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7,
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

Is there a certain kind of connection USB or Fire wire that is best for this older model?

Thank you!!

No such drive as 'best'. You pays your money and with electronics you take your chances. Any reliable drive such as Western Digital, Seagate, Fujitsu, Hitachi etc are all worth considering. Go by price and best warranty offered.

A drive in a Firewire case will certainly work faster than USB. OWC, Mac specialists, offer the Mercury Elite Pro mini which comes in a small compact case and is connectable via FW and USB. Just select the size drive you need:-

I have a couple different types. the brands Harry mentions are good to go by.

If you are moving around a lot and take it with you, look into a ruggedized version in case of it getting knocked off the desk/table.
