No necessarily..I had a Linksys router for a long time and used it with an iPhone 3G and many other devices without any problems. I have an Airport Extreme now and it works fine with my iPhone 4..

Have you updated the router to the latest firmware? When did this start happening? Does it reconnect to the wireless if you ask it to?
