Minimum needed to run garageband

Hi - I don't know a thing about Macs but want to buy a mac for my son for Christmas. He writes and records music on garageband.

What is the minimum ram, etc. that he will need in order to do everything with garageband?

MBP 17" 2011, 2.3GHz Intel Quad-Core i7, 8GB RAM, MacMini 2011, 2.7GHz Intel Dual-Core i7, 8GB RAM
More RAM the better. You can always get it after purchase as long as you dont get an Air.
