Your Mac's Specs
27" i7 iMac. Intel Quad Core. 16 GB Ram.
Right click on the photo and click on Cut. Then open the event you want to put the photo into then right click and select Paste. Job done.

I doubt that will work, since Events are photos grouped together by time. If the photo the OP wants to import doesn't match the time, I don't think it will import the photo. I could be wrong, can't test it at the moment.

I don't use iPhoto much but why not allow it to import to its own event, then drag and drop to merge into the target event.

In Aperture I just choose the target event and directly import without the intermediate step.
