i want to switch to MAC to learn final cut pro but i want to keep editing on my lap. is a PowerBook worth it?

Yes. Any late model Powerbook can handle Final Cut Pro, albeit slowly.

Also, with the new MacBook Pro and the universal Final Cut coming, it is more than doable.
