There will always be a market for an iOS device that is pocket sized and doesn't require a contract. I'm hoping Apple keeps this in mind. I'd really like an iOS based media player but I don't want to fork out ~ $60/mo. for an iPhone contract.

The way I see it…

The iPod touch serves as the go-to iOS device for those not wanting an iPhone contract.
As for kids…they get Mom or Dad's old iPhone - it becomes a service-less iPhone or it becomes a restricted iPhone (removal of certain software features). Or Mom and Dad gives the kids an iPod touch.

Some of the comments - such as the iPad mini cannibalizing the iPod touch - these two devices are completely different. They have different markets.

After all they're only selling 3 million of them a month for gross sales of only $897,000,000... a month... Chump change.

At this point, I think that's sort of like saying the TV is in it's final stage of product life cycle.

Ain't happening. I wish it would, because there are some things my iPhone does that my iPod dosen't that are the reasons I won't sell my 32GB Unlocked iPhone 4 and get a 32GB iPod Touch.

It doesn't have to be an all or nothing solution though. It is possible for the two to co-exist.
