If you just want to type on the photo, just drag the photo to the dock and drop on Preview then go to Previews Tool menu and click on Annotate and select Text. Next drag a text box out where you want to type, you can change the font, size and color from the tool bar that will show up by selection the "A" .

As Pomeroy says. You can't do it in iPhoto.

The reason you can't do it is because you don't want to deface the actual photo. Even your grandma knew better -- she wrote those names and dates on the BACK of the photo! :)

The correct way to do this is to add names and info like that to the Notes or IPTC information of the photo so that the info is part of the file, but doesn't deface the picture in any way. Alternatively, you can use the Faces feature of iPhoto to "name" people, or tagging on Facebook (if you use FB)

If you are bound and determined to put captions directly on pictures, the Preview program can do that for you but there's also Portraits & Prints, which while no longer supported is free and works fine.
