My iMac is running slow and sometimes freezes. When I switch it on I get a folder symbol with a ? on it. I think this means it is having trouble finding the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Run disk utility and do both a Verify disk and Repair permissions

It sounds like it could get worse so make sure your back-ups are up to date

Certainly sounds like a failing hard drive, but could be other factors (like just a complete lack of any maintenance whatsoever).

I think it means it can't find a "blessed" Operating System folder.

How did the permissions thing go?

If your harddrive is failing apple is replacing some seagate 1tb harddrives in iMacs back to (i believe) late 2009 .. Some of these techies in here have the link where you can type your serial number to check if your iMac is in the list ..
