Saving doc as PDF

I have created a document in Word on Mac which has text as well as pictures in it. I have saved it as a PDF file , but file size changes from a Word doc file size of 500 kb to a PDF file size of 2.2 MB. Is there any way to save as a smaller file size and why does the file size increase so dramatically?

Since I am new to macforums I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question...Help !!:Confused:

The reason for the increase in file size (apart from the fact that you are changing formats there) is that PDFs include all the information about the fonts AND a complete copy of the pictures, whereas Word just links the images to where it knows they are.
