Iphone 5 is ugly

I used a friend's Iphone 5 on Saturday.

First observation - it was too long and skinny. The height is right but the width is off.

Not 'trolling' nor attacking the product. Just an opinion, perhaps counter to others but putting it out there anyways.

My kids say that there's an ad on tv showing how much you can do with an iphone with one hand. As if it was designed to be held with one hand and the maximum radius of the index finger dictated the width of the phone. Who uses one hand predominantly with an iPhone? Drivers?

(in our discussion, they also mentioned that kids are jokingly calling it a 'wand', so my initial observation doesn't seem too far off).

I'll bet that the Iphone 6 will be wider.

The iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5 are the essentially the same width, the iPhone 5 is 4.87 inches as opposed to the 4.54 inches for the iPhone 4/4S..

So it is taller, but same width..and it was meant/designed to be taller.

For reference:
iPhone - 61mm
iPhone 3G/3Gs - 62.1 mm
iPhone 4/4S - 58.66 mm
iPhone 5 - 58.6 mm

Based on that, you are certainly the iPhone 6 will be wider?

A picture to visualize..I can hardly imagine anyone can feel the difference between 2.37 inches and 2.31 inches..

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For me, while it's taken a little adjusting to the lighter, slimmer profile of the 5 it's simply the most stunning piece of tech I've seen or used in some time.

Couldn't be happier with it.

Mine is out for delivery on our local UPS truck this morning, so hopefully I will soon be able to echo your sentiments. :D

I didn't think it looked right, so put it on my digitizer.
The vertical scale in those two pics is not accurate.
The height difference is not as much as that pic indicates.

Using the 4.5" scale on the 4S, makes the 5 in that pic at 5.06" tall.
Using the scale on the 5, makes the 4S in that pic 4.32" tall.
They managed to keep the horizontal scale accurate between the two of them.

And it's about time I upgraded from this 3GS I'm still using also.

I should say I take no credit for the screwy image..I blame the floating head with the propellers for that..:)

I'm going to the Apple Store this coming Saturday (20th) and play with one. If they have any in inventory, my wife and I are each gettting one. Black for me and white for her.

To call any of the iPhones "ugly" is some serious hyperbole!

The silver back on the white 5 is great, just not keen on the white front.

The black/slate together, I think, look great. Black on black hides the non-updated apps that are a bit shorter too!

Full screen video just looks huge now :)

I wish they offered a black with a silver aluminum back.

You live in Texas . . . just take your pocketknife and scrape off the black anodizing. ;)

I had one in my hand the other day - I sort of think it could be a little wider as well - both to balance the increase in length but also to offset the reduction in thickness so I feel like I have something to grab onto - just a personal observation/preference from 2 min of holding one - probably won't stop me from getting one - assuming I can get the upgrade price.

"It's a personal preference" pretty much sums it up.

I love my Macbook Air and first generation Ipad (the 2nd and 3rd generation being even better but 1st gen meets my needs)

The Iphone 5 just doesn't feel or look right. One thing I will say in defense of the designers is that the length probably creates a better/longer distance between mouth and ear. However, they should have widened it slightly for those of us that read twitter, email extensively. Or....tada...maybe that's what the October 23rd Ipad mini is for, lol.

Carry a phone5 and an ipad mini. Why didn't I think of that?:)

I'm so old I can remember when handsets were much taller than they were wide ...

And then later, like this:

So the idea that the iPhone is significant longer than it is wide doesn't strike me as particularly "odd." :)

Now that's funny.

I may revert to that lower one as a 'phone' and an Ipad Mini (cellular) as my data device. Tired of paying for and carrying 2 data devices.

Now that may be a good idea right there. A dumb phone and an iPad with cellular would probably be cheaper than what I'm paying now. Not to mention a map screen I could see without the need for putting my reading glasses on while driving.

I can't see that happening since Apple appears to be dedicated to the notion that the user should be able to "reach" across the device with their thumb and I'm willing to bet that increasing the width risks this.

Smartphone users typically use 2 hands (thumbs :) ).

The one finger 'reach' concept dumbs down the product, particularly with the processing power at hand.
