DAT transfer to Mac

I need to transfer audio tracks (songs) from Sony DTC 750 DAT, ultimately to store to iTunes on a MacBook Pro. I have a stereo phono to mini jack cable. Do I need software?

If you plug the stereo output into the MBP, you can perhaps use Audacity to record the songs into WAV or something and then encode them into high-bitrate MP3 files for import into iTunes..
