Where did my appointments go??

I have birthdays, anniversaries, etc. set to repeat every year. That feature works perfectly. However, appointments and events that don't repeat have disappeared on previous months.

Today, I needed to refer to an event that occurred in July. When I selected July, no events were there (except for the ones set to repeat every year).
So I checked other past months, and same thing...

What happened? Is this the way it works for everyone? I don't like the fact that I can't go back and see an appointment that occurred in July.
Is there a setting that I am missing?

Did you back them up to iCloud?

I am backing up to iCloud
Guess I need to figure out how to get them from iCloud?
