Mac files on 2008 Server

For back-up purposes, I am attempting to store the files that my Mac user uses on our 2008 Server. I am able to connect to a share (via smb) that I created for the user and it seems like (from the Mac side) the files are on the server. However when I go into the share from the server side, there is nothing in the folder, thus I am unable to back them up properly. Is there something else that needs to be done, like set-up nfs services? Or is there an easier way around what I am trying to accomplish? From researching on the web, it seems most people have a problem with connecting. (this is not my problem) Thanks in advance for any assistance.
