I have an old Intel Mac. If I made an appointment for next month when I know that I'll be in a city that has a Mac store, could I pay them to update my Mac OS 10.4.11 to something that I can use with my iPod Touch 4 to transfer apps and music WITHOUT having to buy the disks themselves? Right now, I have to go to the guest room next to mine and use my dad's PC laptop, an I'd rather just stay here in MY room! I never touch the OS on my PCs and Mac, just the stuff I download personally.

I doubt it, but wouldn't hurt to call them and ask.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

If this Mac is definitely an Intel model, lash out and purchase Snow Leopard Mac OS X.6 on eBay and such, but make sure you purchase a full retail install DVD and not a silver grey model specific disc. The OS disc is the best trouble shooter you can get. Originally available for $29 but with release of Lion and then Mountain Lion, and Apple no longer selling this, the price has rocketed. Won't hurt to ask however:-

Apple does in fact still sell this disc, they just don't do so on their online stores. Give them a call.

You *have* to get on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher in order to get the Mac App Store, which will enable you to go on to Mountain Lion ($20). ML doesn't have disks, it is download-only from the Mac App Store.

My white 2007 Intel Macbook will not let me update to Mountain Lion. Is there a minimum requirement for updating? I thought just Intel hardware?

Unfortunately, no. There are specific requirements for the video hardware and EFI. As such, some earlier Intel models are excluded.

Here are the system requirements:

Not sure which 2007 Macbook you have, but I have the later 2007 one with Santa Rosa Intel Chipset. EFI IS 64-Bit but it's the GMA X3100 GPU that has no driver for Mountain Lion and stopping it. If you have an early 2007 Macbook then it could be 32-bit EFI Issue also as ML is TOTALLY 64-Bit and will not run on a 32-Bit EFI.

Thanks cwa107 and dtravis7.

My MacBook must not have the Santa Rosa chipset, because I remember trying before to get 64-bit and the EFI not permitting that. This MacBook is still great with Snow Leopard though. One day, I may up the ante and get a newer MacBook. Who knows? Maybe a MacBook Pro, if I save my pennies (and they don't de-valuate too badly). :)
