Can anyone explain how I can use my music or 3rd party ringtones in leu of the factory ringtone and alerts?

I use Garage Band to trim the song and then there's a menu option somewhere at the top to send to iTunes as a ringtone. I think you then have to drag it from the playlist into the ringtone group on the left. But that's it. Super easy to do if you have a Mac with Garage Band.
