I recieved an ibook for xmas. I just heard that new ibooks are coming out in 2 weeks time. The problem is that I don't have the receipt for this ibook. But its unopened, its completely sealed. Would it be possible to exchange it in for store credit?

Doubtful. You would need a receipt for any return and you have 21 days from the purchase to do it

Give it a shot...!!! I also heard they will charge you 10% re-stocking fee.

If not try Best Buy/CompuSmart...they are pretty easy to deal with especially after Christmas and they don't have any fees.

Depends on if you registered it. If you bothered to register it, then you might have a shot.

I always thought Apple only gave you 14 days. And yes, even with your receipt, there is still a 10% restocking fee for any open-box merchandise.

You see its not opened though so why would they charge me a 10% restocking fee. Even if they did charge a 10% restocking fee I guess that'd be better than nothing. That's more than what I'd get for it on ebay. But I'm still hoping I can get the full price for it. This one guy on another forum said he was able to return it in the form of a gift card. And he didn't have a reciept either. He got the full price plus tax.

Its like a car, the second it leaves the lot its value decreases, even if everybody is looking at you as you leave and you pull back in, the item has left the merchant so it is a used good

uhmmm no *** analogy. If I had a reciept this is nothing like a car. Sure in my case cause I don't have a reciept but its not always like that.

Terrible analogy.

Its exactly the same. Unless there is something wrong the system apple will not just allow you return something and get every cent back for it, especially without a receipt

What do you mean especially without a receipt? Yeah I know in my case I won't get anything for it probably but if I had a receipt then I could bring it back for the full price.

Unless it was registered with Apple or bought at an Apple store, it's not a good analogy at all. Car dealerships will not usually do anything for once you sign the last bit of paperwork, even if you never get in the car.

Most places will charge you a restocking fee, even with a receipt. The only place where you may be able to get away with it is Frys, they don't usually charge a restocking fee. The only other thing is that they may keep track of the unit via S/N, in which case they would know if you bought it there or not.

I'd say contact the folks who gave it to you and try to get the receipt. Odds are they can go back to where they bought it and get a receipt even now just by showing the CC they paid for it with. You may lose the restocking fee, but at least you get some of the value of it back.

I doubt they'll give you a refund or store credit without a receipt, because it could have been purchased with the student discount.

I bet you can get at least $900 for it somewhere. Post it up on craigslist or some other local classifieds.

Come to think of it, if it was bought at an Apple Store, they DO track stuff via SN, so they would be able to tell when and where it was bought.

If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase, return it with the original receipt and original packaging within fourteen (14) calendar days of the date of purchase. If the item is returned unopened, in the original box, we will exchange it or offer a refund based only on the original payment method. Apple will mail a check within ten (10) business days for cash, cash equivalent, and check transactions over $250. Except where prohibited, a 10% restocking fee will apply to any non-defective item that requires Apple to perform rework prior to resale; please ask a Mac Specialist for details. Please note the following:

• Opened software, memory, and other media can be exchanged for the same item, but cannot be returned for a refund.

• Custom-configured products, including any personalized iPod, cannot be returned or exchanged.

• Purchases made using a lease are subject to the terms of your lease agreement and cannot be returned.

• Non-Apple products are sold by Apple "as is." Consult the manufacturer for warranty terms and conditions.

• Products can be returned only in the country in which they were originally purchased.

Holiday Return Policy

Gift items purchased at a retail Apple Store between October 31, 2005 and December 24, 2005, can be returned with an original Gift Receipt through January 8, 2006. If the item is returned in the original box, unopened, with the original packaging, we will exchange it or offer you an Apple Gift Card. All other standard purchase policies outlined above apply.

not the whole return policy, the part where there is a restocking fee, you can't just get 100% money back

Read your own post:

Except where prohibited, a 10% restocking fee will apply to any non-defective item that requires Apple to perform rework prior to resale;

In other words, if you return it and it requires no rework from Apple, you won't pay a restocking fee.

This also makes it pretty clear:

If the item is returned unopened, in the original box, we will exchange it or offer a refund based only on the original payment method.
