Recently, I saved a new Microsoft Word document on the desktop of my iMac. Later, I tried to change the document's name. However, the program no longer permits me to change the name of any document. Prior to this, I have been able to change a document's name - without any difficulty. Have I inadvertently locked something? How do I unlock it?

The document could be locked. If the icon has a padlock in the bottom left hand corner, the file is locked. If this is the case, right click it > Get Info > uncheck the Locked box.

Thank you for your response. I have come to recognize, though, that the situation, is quite different - and far worse - from what I originally thought. I hope you can still help.

It turns out, that the documents, themselves are not locked. (I have full access to them on another computer.) What does seem to be the problem, however, is that I cannot alter ANY document in ANY file. I seem to have done something with the entire computer. (My husband's files are also affected - and he's not happy!)

Let's check the permissions before we continue. Right click a file that you can't edit > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions. What does it say in that section for each set of permissions?

Eureka, problem solved! Thank you! (Except for the following: How did that happen? What did I do? How do I avoid doing that again?)

Wow, very cryptic. Problem solved..... How?
The files were really locked? (That's the only direction/suggestion posted.)
