Why aren't my desktop shortcuts linked to their origin? When I save changes to a document I opened on my desktop, like a Word document I have a shortcut to on my desktop - the changes I made don't appear when I open the same document going through "Finder" and "Documents".

Was the file on the desktop created by "Make Alias" or "Duplicate" from the Finder. What you want is an alias.

If it's an alias, it will have an arrow in the bottom corner of the icon on the desktop.

First tell us how you're creating the "shortcuts" (which by the way are called aliases in Mac OS X).

As a test I created an alias (shortcut) of one of my Word 2011 documents and placed it on my desktop. I then opened the alias document, made a change, saved it and closed the document. I opened the same document (not alias) from the Finder Documents folder and the changes were there.

So it seems that you may not be doing it correctly?
