i've tried installing Lion 10.7.4 from my usb thumb drive but when I select the drive from the start screen by holding down the Option key, it lists my usb as an EFI drive and it boots straight into Lion. How can I make it install Lion instead of booting straight away?

How did you place Lion on to the thumb drive? Did you use the instructions as given here?

Yes that is exactly how I did it. I have suspicions that the EFI on the usb thumb drive is causing the problems. My other usb thumb drive, a Sandisk, worked perfectly well for both Lion and Mountain Lion.

You have to partition it AND use the GUID partition table option otherwise it wont boot

Yes, I've done all that but it still won't install after copying the InstallESD.dmg to it.

Update: Today I bought a new Lexar 8GB usb thumb drive and everything was perfect and now installs as it was meant to. My suspicions that my previous usb thumb drive was at fault appear to be correct.
