I have a MacBook Pro with a 500 GB HD. I only have 57 GB space remaining with 319.78 GB being listed under backups (see attached screen shot). I have no idea what these files are, how to find the and/or delete them to free space. Any suggestions would be most appreciated...

First turn time machine off..
sudo tmutil disablelocal
Copy and paste that into the terminal, that turns off local snapshots.
The go into time machine and delete the local backups..
