How to import footage from Hi8 camera?

Hello,

10 years ago I bought a Dazzle DVC-80 to import footage from my old Hi8 camera. At the time I had a Dell (I know, I know - I've seen the error of my ways). Obviously, the driver will not work with my new MacBook Pro, however I wonder if I can still use the Dazzle hardware. In case you are unfamiliar with this, the Dazzle is an external USB connector that allows you to plug in your camera's A/V outputs. I could download the Dazzle DVD Recorder software, but I'm reluctant to drop $50 on it in case it doesn't work.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm hoping to save money and utilize what I have vs. purchasing the Canopus converter.

Thanks!

Does your old Hi8 camera have a firewire port by chance? My first generation Sony had a four pin and the Mac had a nine pin port. I purchased a bidirectional four to nine cable from Monoprice.com for less that seven dollars that works perfectly. Imovie even correctly picked the correct camera model when it connected.

Unfortunately, no. Just the S-video and A/V output. I'll check out the website you provided though. Maybe I can find a new piece of equipment for cheap. Thanks!

I purchased an Elgato Video capture device that has RCA and S-video on it and software for my Mac for around 75 dollars from B&H photo in New York. I have a bunch of old vas to import and it seems to do a nice job. Seems to be pretty well liked by the Apple users that I have talked to .

I'm suspicious of your claim that your Hi-8 camera doesn't have a Firewire port. Either this camera must pre-date iMacs or it's likely it DOES have such a port but might be calling it IEEE1394 or "iLink." Check your manual (or just give us the model number).
