Why would there be a problem turning it off? As long as you don't mind waiting for it to turn on each time, that's perfectly fine..

Putting the computer in "sleep mode" or turning it off completely...are just two different options. "Sleep mode" obviously has the advantage of "waking up" the computer faster.

There is no problem turning the computer off.

I'd certainly turn it off if you are travelling because if it takes a knock with the drive still active you could get problems.

What pendlewitch said. It's not good to travel with the computer on. Turn it off. When at home it's fine to leave it on and just let it go to sleep.

I agree with member "pendlewitch". I recommend turning off your notebook computer when traveling especially for folks who carry it about in a back pack. After all, how long does it take to boot it up? Is a minute or less going to make that much difference? It might just save you from a large repair bill.
