What password are you trying to change? Are you referring to the password when you first boot your Mac to log on? There is that and also a firmware password. Which one?

The one that you first boot your computer with. However I bought this computer used. I did have to create a log in for me and a password before I started using it. Then it failed to work in Jan of 2012 and I created a new one but cannot remember how I did it. I am trying to download flash player and it wants to make changes but needs the password. I assume it is the one that I used when I first booted the computer.

OK, you're referring to a new Admin password. Do you have the original boot disk that came with the machine or did it come pre-loaded with Lion? If so, take a look at this Apple KB article which explains how: LINK
