My screen goes blank at random for no apparent reason.
It is not an energy saving issue (don't think so).

Hey that's a statement rather than a question. If it's your screen just going blank and everything else is fine then it could be graphics card or a power disconnect caused by a damaged or faulty connection, for example the ribbon cable between the main body and the screen. Take it to Mac store and let them give you an opinion.
