Excel temporary file which can't be deleted!

Hi, I am a newbie.

I have a temporary excel file on my desktop that I can't delete. I am currently using OS X on my macbook air.

Please advise.

Chances are Excel isn't completely shut down. Does it still have the little blue dot beneath it's icon in the dock?

If so, right-click and choose quit.

It has been completely shut down. I did not keep it at dock and it is not there.

So where is the temp file and what error do you get?
Does the problem remain after a reboot?

Ah, good question. I don't think I reboot for quite some time. I shall keep you posted.
When I dragged it to the trash, it showed "...can't be moved to trash because it can't be deleted"
