I am an author by trade, and use special characters in my works, that I used to assign to special keystrokes on my PC - Is it possible to do that with my Mac? What I am trying to do is get accented latin letters to be easy to use, without inserting a special character with the 'characters' panel. I am using the ò œ æ ₤ ă ŭ characters in my current work.

They are already assigned to keystrokes, and are very easy (particularly compared to Windows). I'm not sure how it could be any simpler than (for example) option-e for é.

Hold the key on the keyboard and characters will appear above it. Then press the number assigned to it.

Example: Press and hold letter "e". Release and press "2", This will appear "é"

hope this helps
