I am getting a message in the sound preferences that The selected device has no output controls for Digital Out. It was fine two days ago. I sent a ton of stuff in my downloads folder to trash and deleted it to open space on my system. Could I have deleted something I need for the Digital Out to work?

It's unlikely. What machine do you have, and have you plugged anything into the combined digital/analog audio line out jack lately?

It would help if you could post your machine's specs and OS version.
