Every now & then you come across a special opportunity. If you capture it correctly it will remain in your collection of favorite photos. I think this shot is one of those. All these turtles were seeking the warmth of the sun at the same time. Even though the lighting was really poor I managed to stretch the capabilities of my D800 and get it home.

Great photo Bob

The low light capabilities of the D800 (I see you shot at ISO 6400) look spectacular

Excellent photo, artistically as well as technically. I'd argue about the light being poor. It may have been dim but it sure is pretty. I've worried about the low-light capabilities of the D800 with so many pixels stacked on the sensor. This photos put those worries to rest. You have a great camera and use it well.

Thank you for your incite and comments. My main reason for posting images captured with the D800 is to demonstrate its outer limits. One of the many reasons I upgraded from my D7000 is the D800's ability to take such large photos that it affectively doubles the focal length of my excellent lenses. This shot was taken with an inexpensive Nikkor 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6G lens. It sells for around $138 and has no VR(Vibration Reduction). Early reviews on this lens stated that the lens proved soft at 300mm. I disagree because if you shoot at F/11 and a minimum shutter speed of 1/325" you can achieve very sharp photographs at 300mm. Not everyone can afford thousands of dollars for the top notch fast glass but anyone can afford $138.

There is an old saying in photography, "It ain't the toys, it's how you play with them."

You seem to know your equipment well. Too many photographers don't know the technical aspects of their craft. You have to work within the limitations of your equipment. By the way, this comes from a man with a large investment in Canon L lenses. The D800 is making me think about switching.

:Angry-Tongue::Angry-Tongue:

I just might have to do that when I get my degree and start making money with my cameras full time.

Very nice Bob. To be pedantic, them be tortoises not turtles. Turtles have flippers and not feet.
