Movie problems!

I downloaded a home movie from my friends computer which ends in ".avi". When I try to play it with VLC it plays the sound but no picture.

If I try it with Quicktime I get a white screen and only get the sound again. Then it says that some components could be missing and that I should go to the quicktime site to get the necessary components.

I know nothing about this stuff. Can someone please please please help me?

Download those codecs there. Its strange that VLC doesn't play it though

Ummm, ok, I think I downloaded what I'm supposed to... what now? Sorry, but could you please talk me through it step by step cause I have zero experience with these things. Thanks.

Download divx instead, it has a simple installer and should solve your problem

Thanks for your help... I really appreciate it. Downloaded Divx and converted the file but the same problem... sound only! Oh well, I hate giving up but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Are there any other media players that could possibly work? Thanks again.

I had the same issue, until I downloaded the player called Mplayer OSX. It plays .AVI files wonderfully. You may be able to google it or something, but I wouldn't be without it.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded it, but no luck with that either! Do you just drag and drop and it works? Cause I can't get anything to open with it. Maybe I should just give up altogether cause I'm having no luck at all.

No, for MPlayer OSX you need to go up to file>Open and then locate the .AVI file on your system. It will then pull it into the box, and you can double click it, or just highlight it and click play. There is an option for full screen mode too. Seriously, don't give up on it because it works perfectly.

Thanks, but it still doesn't work, in fact, not only no picture but it playes the audio in fast forward! Oh well, guess it just wasnt meant to be.

I had the same problem with a .avi. I downloaded the 3ivx codec and used Divx Doctor to fix the problem. The 3ivx codec works in quicktime, and fixed my problem.
