Definitely reccomend getting Carbon Copy Cloner and creating a Bootable Clone/Backup of your HD.

EDIT: Depending on which OS version you are running you can either purchase disks (10.5 or 10.6) or create a bootable USB for Lion (10.7).

Back up Disk

I have OS X ver. 10.7.4. How do I use a USB drive to back up? Is 8 G USB drive enough?

Back up disk

Down loaded program and did backup on USB. Takes less than 1GB. Thanks for the help.
