In the list on the left side of my mac screen there is no item that i can click on to "save an email". How can i save an email??

Click on File, then Save As. ?

Just drag and drop into a Folder you created.

THANX FOR YOUR HELP BUT....
I hate to show my stupidity but I'm 87 and am not computer savvy enough to know how to create a folder.

Go to your desk top screen and right click or click with two fingers on the track pad. Thats how it works on my MacBook pro.

Right click, then click "New Folder".

You might want to take a look at Mac 101, Apple's getting started guide (see it here). Unfortunately, the tour doesn't seem to be working but the other links do. This won't help with your question but will give you an overview of how to work with your Mac.
