The best newsreader for the Mac (or Windows) that I have found is Thunderbird by Mozilla. Free and also includes a very good eMail client. Easy to setup and use.

I used this one for many years before roadrunner killed usenet

What really killed Usenet was all the garbage, porn, and piracy which was rampart. However, FIDO, ILink, and a few other networks are still up and running and maintained by some very dedicated BBS sysops. I still monitor the FIDO Windows and Mac net using my Thunderbird newsreader. (NNTP) Not much traffic, but I still maintain contact with some very old friends on there.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember FIDO very well. Had NO IDEA it was still alive.
