after 6 years my iMac finally bit the bullet and i bought a new one. my nikon d200 is also about 6 years old. i finally tried to upload pics today and the iMac won't read the mass storage AT ALL, anywhere. the camera says PC when plugged in, the mac shows no sign there being a USB. tried PTP mode, also did not work. called nikon, downloaded viewnx2 as suggested, still won't read. can't find it in iPhoto or image capture.

the nikon guy said nikons are only supported up to 10.7.2, my system is 10.7.4. am i going to have to wait for nikon to get up to this operating system to upload my pictures? or am i missing something? or is my camera really just that old??

I thought the iMac had an SD card reader built into it? Did they stop doing that?

Longtime Nikon user. Do not upload via attaching your D200 to your iMac. Nikon Transfer is also fraught with problems for some people. Upload via CF card reader, much safer and kinder to camera. ;D

My first thought, but then I remembered that the D200 (the OPs camera) used CF not SD cards.

Way... way too many specs to list.

Yep, this is true. I'll have to take a look at mine when I'm back around my computer, I think there's a USB mode menu setting (from really old memory, since I also use a card reader)

Ok, I went and looked at my D200. Under Settings in the menu, you need to find USB and make sure it's Mass Storage, NOT P2P (that's useful for tethering, etc)

In his first post on this subject the OP says that neither Mass Storage or PTP work. ;)

You're right, I've obviously hit the 'far too busy to post' stage :Smirk:

Transfer of Images from Nikon camera.

Try downloading Nikon Transfer.

This package also works with my Sony video camera which takes still shots.

Nothing other than a card reader and the already built in "Image Capture" is actually needed, if you don't have any other software to use. And it's nonsense that OS X doesn't support Nikon cameras past 10.7.2 Just absolute nonsense.

I shoot with a D300. Have used Lightroom etc with Mountain Lion and Lion as well. That guy needs a new job. Also, did you make sure that external drives appear on the desktop or sidebar via Finder Preferences? Perhaps it's mounted but you just don't see it?

My Nikon D600 is not recognized in Finder, Desktop or Sidebar. Even the card reader does not work.
Lightroom however does see it and I import from there.

If Lightroom can see it, Finder can see your card reader.

Open up Finder - Preferences and verify you have the appropriate items checked to be shown.

Sidebar tab will be a box for external drives - Believe the General tab has a box to show external drives on the Desktop.
If those are not checked, then an external will not show.

Thanks, guess I should have made that more clear in my last paragraph.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked everything if Finder Preferences, and rebooted.
It's still the same, Finder does not see the camera, LR does. The same is true on both my Mac Pro and MacAir.

Well then I suppose you should do what the rest of us do.. Use a card reader. It's safer anyway in terms of data transfer. They can be had for less than $20

As I mentioned in post #14, the card reader isn't recognized either. LR sees the card reader and camera, but the OS does not. Maybe it's because the D600 is a new model.
It's not a big deal for me. As long as LR works, that's all that matters.

Sorry, missed that bit! I do suppose that it's possible that the 600 isn't supported yet, but I would think that it should be very soon. Yet, it doesn't make sense to me that a card reader wouldn't work, no matter the camera model, since an NEF is an NEF etc.. or a Jpg is a jpg.. nothing to do with firmware there. Something doesn't seem right to me here. Have you tried a different USB port, or a different card reader? Maybe hook up a known good USB hub..

Doug

Edit: Looked and saw that Lion and ML do support the D600. Have you checked for updates?
