This may sound very simplistic but, I am trying to share files and folders with an ethernet
cable connecting a windows 7 to an iMac G5. The Mac is cooperating, but the PC laptop
is not cooperating. When I had it on wireless connection I could see a "map" on windows 7
I tried SMB, but it turns out I don't want that.

Unless you enjoy a lot of hassle, I would suggest buying a large-capacity thumb drive (like 8GB or higher) and just use that to transfer files between the two machines. Your Mac is super-old by computer standards and I doubt you're going to have an easy time of getting it to talk to Windows 7 reliably.
