I was just given an older PowerMac G5 w/OS X 10.5 on it, and I'm wanting to stop using Windoze altogether.

One of the most used programs in my computer is Micro$oft Publisher. I use it to publish our church material, bulletins, invitations, announcements, etc.

What Mac program will substitute for Micro$oft Publisher, and do just as good a job?

Thanks

Although Pages will work for layout, it's primarily a Word Processor.

Two programs that are inexpensive and available from the Mac App store are:

iStudio Publisher = $17.99 (excellent substitute, actually better than MS Publisher in my opinion)

Swift Publisher = $19.99 (very good but doesn't handle text layout with graphics as well as iStudio does. However, it comes with a large variety of nice clipart and templates.)

I have both of the above programs and also Pages.

Just my luck, the site says there is no such program.

Plus it says that I need 10.6 or better, and a network connection with the Mac. Unfortunately, the Mac has no network connection, and I cannot download anything with my Windoze machine

What a strange thing to say. You have it EXACTLY backwards.

While I prefer Pages over either one, I agree completely that these are two excellent, inexpensive substitutes (as you say, far superior really) for MS "Publisher."

Really? By whose definition..... Not that you're prejudiced in any way. ;P

I think it's pretty clear in Apple's marketing and promotion of Pages that it is intended as a desktop layout tool first and foremost. While the word processing side isn't bad, it's pretty clearly not the focus (or it would have a lot more features).

As I say, I use it for both (though I prefer Bean for word processing for various reasons), but the layout tools are IMO far superior to the wp tools.

Here's what Apple says....

Pages is both a streamlined word processor and an easy-to-use page layout tool. It allows you to be a writer one minute and a designer the next, always with a perfect document in the works.

Note that the OP was looking for a substitute program for MS Publisher not Microsoft Word (or I would agree with you).

And by the way.... MS Word 2011 also does nice layout work with plenty of templates to choose from, although I still prefer iStudio Publisher to do our weekly bulletins.
