It really depends on the specific model - and it's hard to pinpoint which model you have based on that description.

I often recommend people have a look at Crucial.com, even if you don't buy memory from them. They have some tools to help identify the specific memory modules you need and can tell you exactly what the capacity of your system is.

Can I increase the memory in my late 2008 iMac from 4 gb to 8 gb?
Thank you. I have an iMac desktop Model #A1225 with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and a 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory. I don't know if that helps a little.

Apple states 4 GB for your model, however, Mactracker says you can install up to 6 GB. That means 1 x 4GB module + 1 x 2GB module = 6 GB. You can not install 8 GB.
