Do you have Dial-Up service? Do you have a verified connection? Once you establish that you no longer have to use the AOL browers to acces websites, you can use any browser. About the email are you saying you want to view your AOL mail outside of the AOL browser?

It's my experience that AOL makes people dumber. Thats not to say you are dumb. Its just that once you've lived in the AOL bubble too long you cant exist without it.
Rant finished.
