What routine maintenance chores should I do with my mac?

Is there a disc defragmenting or disc clean up program I should be using?

I have a macbook pro with OS Lion.

See my essay (linked in my sig) but basically no. While your Mac is not quite maintenance-free, it's remarkably close and mostly takes care of itself. Users need to do very little in this department, really.

I have had macs for 3-4 years now and all i really do to them is repair disk permissions. Also try CCleaner it works great and available in the app store.

OP:

Beware of CCCleaner... while it works well on a PC, it's a fairly new product for the Mac and there have been reports of problems with it. Also stay away from similar products that purport to be able to "clean your Mac".

Follow the advice give by member chas_m and you should be fine.
