help with playing powerpoint from macbook to TV with HDMI

I am trying to hook my new macbook to the TV to do powerpoint presentations.
I have the adapter and I am using the HDMI hook up.

The computer display shows up on the tv but goes in and then out to static
every two seconds. It won't maintain the display.

Any one know why?
