I have a problem mounting the optical drive on a Mac Mini - 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo running System 10.4.11 Tiger.

I was copying a DVD using Toast Version 8 - inserted blank disc, it prepared the lead in and then froze - I had to cancel? The optical drive is now not recognized.

This has happened before and the cd drive appears again several weeks later?

I edited your title so as to help clarify your question. "Mr" doesn't tell us much about the problem. ;)

The problem is, the drive was in the middle of an operation and you stopped it unceremoniously. So, until the drive finishes up with that operation, it's not making itself available to the OS.

Doing a cold boot of the machine should clear up the issue (shut down, power off and then turn back on) temporarily.

But if it's regularly freezing during disc burns, you may have a bad drive there. I would recommend picking up a cheap, external USB burner and see if the problem persists with it.

Many thanks - a cold start from shut down, mounted the disc which I was able to eject.

I also tried "Command + c" at start up.
