What do you mean by fails, does it give you a 404 error or something? Since I'm not sure what you mean my advice would be to clear everything under tools>clear recent history>Everything. Then restart your computer and see if it works.

Not really sure what you're saying here, but as a temporary workaround, just use a different search engine. There are plenty of good ones about.
