Email is too big

I want to send an email that is 3.1k in size, plus four pdf attachments that total 1.8mb. However, when it is sent, it becomes 11.2mb. Why is this?

They won't be growing in size. How have you calculated the size?

How it was calculated

I sent just the text of the email to myself and measured the size when it came in. The size of the files was derived from Finder.
